Superintendent's Message

Welcome to the Melrose Public Schools. We recognize that Melrose is a community that values education and we are committed to building strong partnerships between the families we serve and the schools their children attend. Together we make a difference in the lives of our students and work with them to build a bridge to the future.

The Melrose Public Schools embodies a professional learning community wherein current research informs instruction and challenges us all to be lifelong learners. We use assessment and targeted professional development to improve our ability to reach out and to differentiate instruction for all learners. We see students as partners in their own learning and seek to foster a respectful and supportive culture in all of our schools.

This year we are opening the Franklin Early Childhood Center to meet the needs of our youngest learners and are proud to note that we are the only district in the Middlesex League to have such a school which is also accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The Franklin Early Childhood Center is home to the Title I, Pre-K and Preschool programs. These programs are designed to encourage exploration, promote social and cognitive growth and foster a love of learning.

The opening of the new Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School and the technological update of Melrose High School demonstrates how a technologically rich learning environment helps to better prepare our students to be successful contributing members of the 21st century. We must help students to master 21st century skills and the competencies students need as outlined by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills. These competencies include "...such things as oral and written communication skills, self-direction, social responsibility, mastery of technology and the ability to work in teams. Research also shows that when students are engaged in 21st century learning, including rigorous courses that incorporate critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, collaboration, contextual learning and information technology, they are more likely to graduate and transition to postsecondary education and careers."
