BDA: Organizational Meetings

The Chairman and Vice Chairman of the School Committee will be elected annually by Committee members at the first meeting in December. Any Committee member who holds another elected office in the City of Melrose will not serve as Chairman of the Committee or of any subcommittee.

In municipal election years, the December vote will be considered preliminary with the official vote conducted at the first meeting in January. Both the Chairman and Vice Chairman will hold their respective offices for a term of one year or until a successor is elected.

A majority of Committee members will constitute a quorum.  The election will proceed as follows:

  1. The Superintendent will act as the presiding officer for the election of Chairman of the School Committee.
  2. Nominations for the office of Chairman will be made from the floor.  Nominations must be accepted by members under consideration. Once nominations are closed, voting can begin.
  3. The Chairman will be elected by a majority roll call vote of the members present and voting.  If no nominee receives a majority vote, the election will be declared null and void and nominations will be reopened.
  4. Upon election, the new Chairman will preside and will call for the election of a Vice Chairman.  That procedure will be the same as that for electing the Chairman.

Any vacancy among the officers occurring between organizational meetings will be filled by a member elected by the Committee.  The election will be conducted as described above. Following election of officers at its organizational meeting, the Committee may proceed to any other business scheduled on the agenda.

The Superintendent will serve as Executive Secretary to the Committee, consistent with City Ordinance.
