KE: Public Complaints

Residents of Melrose are free to bring complaints related to the school department to the Committee. If necessary, the Committee will refer complaints back through proper administrative channels for solutions before investigation or action. Exceptions will be made only when the complaints concern Committee actions or Committee operations.

In general, complaints are best handled as close to their origin as possible so that school department staff  have every opportunity to resolve any problems prior to Committee involvement. The proper channel for complaints regarding instruction, discipline, or learning materials is as follows:

1. Teacher

2. School Building Administrators

3. Superintendent

4. School Committee

If a complaint, which was presented to the Committee and referred back through the proper channels, is adjusted before it comes back to the Committee, a report of the disposition of the matter will be made to the Committee and then filed in the Superintendent’s office.

Matters referred to the Superintendent and/or Committee must be in writing and should be specific in terms of action desired.

The Committee expects the school department staff to receive complaints courteously and to properly replyto a complainant.
