Welcome to MVMMS
Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School is a public middle school in Melrose, MA, serving over 900 students from Melrose and Boston. At MVMMS, our core values are Safety - Thriving - Integrity - Community - Kindness. MVMMS is adjacent to Melrose High School, forming the Secondary Schools Campus. We are fortunate to learn in the newest of the district’s school buildings, completed in 2007. The building offers many features that provide outstanding educational and enrichment opportunities to our students. Among the notable facilities housed in the Middle School are the Victoria McLaughlin Library, and a state-of-the-art auditorium. The top three of our four floors each house a separate grade level, where students’ lockers and core academic classes are located. Each grade level floor is home to a large project room for dynamic learning opportunities for which a traditional classroom is not suitable.
The staff is a highly trained, dedicated group of professionals committed to middle school education. Adults and students are grouped into smaller communities on teams for enhanced teaching and learning. MVMMS students are supported in our team model, which provides students with a personalized and supportive learning environment, as they work with the same group of teachers and classmates throughout the day. The team is the foundation for a strong learning community characterized by a sense of family. Students and teachers on the team become well acquainted, feel safe, respected, and supported, and are encouraged to take intellectual risks.
Our school has a 1:1 initiative where every student has their own Chromebook/computer that is utilized throughout the school day. All Chrombooks are provided by the Melrose Public Schools ensuring access and equity.
Core classes (English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies) are unlevelled and aligned with grade level standards. In grades 7, students who are ready to accelerate their learning have an opportunity to experience a compacted 7th/8th-grade math class. Similarly, in 8th grade, some students have a chance to experience an Algebra I class. Placement in these advanced courses is based on academic performance and teacher recommendation.
In line with middle school best practices, we provide students with various exploratory class offerings to help them discover their interests and develop new skills. These classes are typically designed to be hands-on and engaging, providing students with opportunities to try out new activities and learn about various subjects. Our exploratory courses include art, chorus, band, orchestra, theater, digital literacy, and technology engineering.
We have a robust World Language program that gives our students the opportunity to take one of five languages, beginning in the sixth grade, with exploratory classes. Students’ language journeys formally begin in the seventh grade and continue through their high school career. We are proud that many of our students are able to learn a Language Opportunity Coalition Biliteracy Attainment Award as early as the 8th grade.
Our students have the opportunity to participate in a number of after school activities. We offer a variety of clubs, including Chess Club, Social Justice Club, Art Club, Student Council, and a number of intramural sports. Additionally, students are able to stay after school to receive additional help from teachers or access the library for research, working with peers, or for a quiet productive space for homework. Students interested in the performing arts are able to participate in chorus, band, orchestra, or theater.
