The Global Language Department of the Melrose Public Schools uses a proficiency-based approach to give our students access to both the language and culture of the languages we offer. Students work to gain fluency in listening, reading, writing, and speaking their language of choice in the presentational, interpretative, and interpersonal modes. We pride ourselves on the strong communities we build in our classrooms, schools, city, and abroad. Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School offers students access to French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Melrose High School offers French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish to our students.
Melrose Public Schools has a strong vertical articulation within our language sequences. Because of this alignment, most of our students are able continue their language study in high school and enroll in year 2 of their preferred languaged. This enables the students to meet the two-year Mass Core requirement for foreign language study after completing the equivalent of a third year of language study – which indicates a higher proficiency level and understanding and is a distinct advantage over students who begin their high school study at Year 1.
